Clearly facebook and similar sites are important to people, and thus we will make this more focused on the social side of things. VeganUnity.com offers all the same basic features as facebook, and then some. The key is that if you are vegan, you can't always be doing outreach. drew Hey folks, we are still here, still selling the Vegan Wristband! Took some time to relocate to Victoria, BC by way of Kelowna, then Peachland, but finally back home to British Columbia's beautiful capital city.

drew QUESTION: Public database of slaughterhouses?
Should we start creating a public database of all the slaughterhouses? While we can never achieve glass walls, we can make them less hidden! I have set this up recently, but if something already exists, i can shut it down.
Perhaps if we started bring attention to bear on them, more and more non-vegans would start thinking about their "meat"!

Divavegan Into my fifth month of being vegan... :o)
Last week at Chapters I met that guy there...anyway, somehow into the conversation I told him I was vegan... After a few seconds, he told me I should be very careful cause WE, humans, are born to eat meat... I told him that our ancestors were herbivore and even the shape of their heads were different than it is now (us), probably to better eat plants, etc. he looked at me and said: nah..... I didn't even bother to add anything else since he couldn't even defend his own point of view saying we should be eating meat... I mean if you stick to a point of view, you should be able to defend it!

It really helps to start addressing the common questions and retorts we experience. This can so awesome help reduce the frustration you will feel when confronted with folks who's heads are buried in the sand. These are the ones we need to help the most. ;)

Tumeria Langlois Had a fun time at Greyhound Friend's International Day. Speakers informed us of the issues going on in Ireland, Spain and China. Made a new Irish vegan friend who brought up veganism during her talk. I was happy she did. For lunch we had pizza. All the pizza was vegetarian and two were vegan (which Alex, Bernie My Irish friend, and I devoured!)

 Tumeria LangloisIn Spain they are used for hunting, not racing. When they do not perform well hunting many are hung in trees or just set loose to fend for themselves. Ireland wanted to send greyhounds to China but we protested and now they will not. They still want to help the Chinese set up racetracks there, however, so the Chinese would just get dogs elsewhere. There are no welfare laws in China and many dogs would end up on the dinner table and suffer horrific abuse if they go there. Lurchers (Greyhound crosses- mostly bred with coonhounds) are being bred in the southwest USA for hunting. They want faster hunting dogs. Once again when dogs do not perform well they are drowned, hung or simply discarded. Very sad indeed.
drewI have never knowingly encountered sub-humans who are so callous with dogs. People all around are willfully ignorant of the harm they indirectly inflict on "livestock" (or should we call that a "living being who is a resource), but at least the excuse there is that society is directly responsible for the disconnect. Society is NOT part of the disconnect with dogs, normally just the opposite, at least in the western world, and to see such cruelty and thoughtless acts... almost overwhelms the soul.
Tumeria LangloisIt certainly does! They just see these dogs as tools for their own purposes. They also over breed hoping to get that one special dog. The puppies that don't measure up are discarded in numerous ways mentioned above.

drewPlease pass this on to every friend you know who might be considering a furry friend for the family. Do not use breeders or pet stores. PetFinder.com can hook you up with thousands of dogs or cats that need rescuing. If you *think* you need a specific breed, you can find one here! For the cost you would incur by buying with a breeder, you can fly home a poor soul who needs YOU!
Tumeria LangloisPeople don't realize that you can find find pure breed dogs (If that is what you are looking for) in a shelter. Every breed has rescue groups as well. There is no reason NOT to adopt. So many dogs and cats out there desperate for loving homes and people feel the need to pay breeders to produce more!
drewAnd PetFinder has a groovy iPhone app! I try every single day to spread this message of not buying from breeders or stores. Just last night, i was approached by a nice dude who was watching Nelly walk so calmly in a crowd in Penticton, BC by the beautiful lake, and he was awed by the calmness etc, and he told me he would seek out a breeder etc to get a great border collie.. Well that launched an interesting convo, and 10 minutes later, he was internet-bound for PetFinder.com!
Tumeria LangloisCool!! Good work. I yelled at a former co-worker who bought a puppy from the midwest. The puppy was actually flown to MA in a plane. You darn well it came from a puppy mill. She was a bit embarrassed and promised she would adopt next time. Many people ask us if Isis is a rescue. They just don't understand that all greyhounds in the US are rescued from the track. You can't go out and but a greyhound puppy. In fact, I have never even seen a greyhound puppy except in pictures. The breeders strictly breed for their own kennels. Once greyhound racing ends, which I hope is soon, it is uncertain what will happen to the breed. I would rather see the breed end than for them to be continued to be cruelly treated and used as commodities just to make a buck for someone
